Brooding Melodic Death Doom from New Zealand

Hirsute is a death doom project based in New Zealand and is the work of a single musician, Justin Chorley. Drawing heavy influence from the earlier works of Opeth, Anathema, and My Dying Bride, Hirsute is brooding and emotional with a sound grounded in evocative harmonies, punctuated with heavy rhythms and a mixture of growls and soft vocals.

Chorley began work on what would become Hirsute in 2008 after the disbanding of the thrash metal project he had been heavily involved in for several years. As his desire to explore deeper, darker musical territory grew, so too did his home studio and in 2011 his first solo album Hirsute EP was released. It received an overwhelming response from metal fans worldwide and planning soon began for a full commercial release. As Hirsute EP continued to circulate, anticipation grew in the buildup to the new album which was finally released in February 2014, named after its remarkably bittersweet third track, Still Waiting.

The album has generated an overwhelming amount of interest, prompting several spontaneous reviews and radio airplay around the world. Planning is already underway for the next release which Chorley says will hold true to Hirsute's established sound while going deeper and darker than ever before.
