When the band started out in the early-mid 1980's, they were under the name Sanctuary. Later, a band from Washington State would use the name as well and get signed, so rather than feud over the name, Velasquez opted to alter the band name from Sanctuary to S.A. Sanctuary to avoid confusion. The S.A. is an abbreviation for San Antonio. In the early 1990's, the band ended due to the drummer, and guitarist joining the Air Force. S.A. Sanctuary would reform in 1998 with all new members. As members changed, so did the musical style of the band. Today they are mainly considered Thrash, with some material stemming into Death Metal, as opposed to metal / hard rock band, similar to Iron Maiden in the early days. The bands founder, Orrie Velasquez, is the only original member.
