Paean is a five-piece death metal band from Estonia, that creates music which offers the listener a fresh and interesting take on death metal, spanning extremes from death/black/doom metal to atmospheric acoustic soundscapes. Individual songs form a complete set, backed by a concept story, all of which smoothly blends to form a dark and epic musical experience that is as powerful as it is beautiful. In august 2010, the recording sessions for "The Radiant Moon“ began, and having completed it, new plans to record the debut concept album were conceived. Preparations for the album are already underway, and recording is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011. The concept itself is a metaphorical epic about being born to innocence, only to be betrayed by the society, resulting in total seclusion which, in a vast passing of time will distort the sense of reality.
The band was founded in January 2009 by guitarists Heiko and Endrik, who were shortly after joined by the bass maniac Alari. Intense rehearsing and writing of new material began immideately, but finding a competent drummer and a vocalist for Paean’s music proved to be a more time consuming task. In January 2010, Kevin joined as the vocalist. That was also when recording of the three first demos – „Absolute Solitude“, „Forlorn“ and „An Overwhelming Rival“ – began, and by the time of having finished the first recordings in April, Magnus joined on drums, completing the lineup.
Paean’s first shows took place in a band competition, which was eventually won. That meant, that the third ever gig for the band would be as the opening act for Hard Rock Laager 2010, the largest extreme music festival of Estonia which featured Mayhem, Finntroll, Crionics, Weedeater and so on. Since then Paean has given numerous smaller shows in Estonia.
