Every so often, a young band jumps out from the British metal scene with a sound that’s both brave and crushing. Gone are certain clichés and in their place are genius ideas that elevate them above their peers.

In this case, said band are Birmingham prog metallers Hookah The Fuzz; a bold young outfit with an otherworldly yet thoroughly vicious sound. Having already paved themselves a budding fan base throughout the UK, the band were also invited to be part of Bloodstock festival; playing alongside bands like Opeth, Soulfly & Nightwish. Possessing a sound that sits between the musical mastery of Dream Theater, the thrash of Metallica and the melodious approach of Devin Townsend, HTF have successfully created a sound that’s accessible and appeasing to the ear without losing any essential grit. Tracks like ‘(D)Illusion’, ‘The Girl Do Voodoo’ and ‘Addict’ are fine examples of their debut, self titled album’s continually shifting nature. Harsh, tripped out, melodic and heavy; it’s quite possibly one of the finest British progressive metal albums in several years. If you have an affinity for anything even remotely metal, you need to check out Hookah The Fuzz.

I saw Hookah the Fuzz at Bloodstock in 2008 and they were sick. Keep an eye out for them, they are going to be big!
