Aonia is the land held sacred to the Muses of Greek mythology. While this image sounds serene, the band’s sound — and history — are the polar opposite. Previously known as ‘Cathexis’, the band went through a period of changing band members more often than underwear. Confronting these challenges stopped the band from playing for nearly a full year. Now back to full strength and stability, the current line-up features the original drummer and vocalist along with new guitarists and bassist. The musicians’ wide ranging influences give the band a wholly unique sound. Aonia has played as far north as Grimsby and south as London to enthusiastic crowds. Several other show dates are lined up for 2011 throughout the country and the band will also be recording a new EP in this time. The band has successfully supported acts such as Evil Scarecrow, Drugdealer Cheerleader, Exoterik, Last Stop China Town, Skull of a Mammoth, Scarlet’s Wake, Keltic Jihad, Ziyos and the signed Italian bands 3rd Room and The Shiver. After successfully completing the first round of the 2009 Surface Unsigned competition, the judges described Aonia as ‘Standing out against a background of more traditional metal bands, they proved one of the highlights of the night, delivering a great performance that really got the crowd going.’
